Tip: Central Tokyo = more expensive (e.g., Minato or Shibuya), suburbs like Nerima or Fuchu = cheaper. Expect upfront costs of 2–4 months’ rent (deposit, key money, agency fee). Look for “no key money” or UR housing deals.

Final Thoughts

In Japan, once your annual income hits JPY10 million, income tax becomes significantly heavier. At JPY100 million, it can reach close to 50%. On the other hand, health insurance and pension contributions have upper limits—once your income exceeds a certain level (around JPY7.8 million/year), the amount you pay becomes fixed, regardless of further income increases.

Ultimately, your cost of living scales with your lifestyle. Whether you prioritize housing, food, fashion, books, or gadgets, everyone’s “essentials” differ.
